The Victims

William Donnegan - An African American businessman killed when the mob of angry White Americans stormed his place of residence, slashed his throat and then lynched him. The militia had arrived on the scene, but were too late. He died later at St. John's Hospital.

John Colwell - A White American caught in the crossfire by African Americans, who died later at St. John's Hospital.

Scott Burton - An African American business-man killed while protecting his place of business (barber shop). He was shot and dragged to Twelfth and Madison streets where he was then lynched.

Katherine Howard - A White American accused and awaiting trial for inciting the riot, which may have led to the death of Scott Burton. She committed suicide in the Sangamon County Jail.
